If you were born in Canada, a Canadian birth certificate is required as a proof of Canadian citizenship for most personal identification documents and cards and for many government programs and services. As a new or expecting parent you will eventually want to get your child a birth certificate. A birth certificate is one of the most important documents you and your child will need.

Each province and territory has its own guidelines on how to obtain a birth certificate, and its own birth certificate. In many provinces you may obtain a form on line.

You will need baby's birth certificate to open a bank account for them, to apply for your child's passport, and apply for their Social Insurance Number.
